Sant Llorenç de la Muga

Pure beauty

Away from mass tourism and the hustle and bustle of the coast you will find the old charming village of Sant Llorenç de la Muga (San Lorenzo de la Muga). It is located in the Alt Empordà region and we can easily call this one of the most beautiful villages in Catalunya. Not only because of medieval treasures but also the nature is wonderful. Sant Llorenç lies (unfairly) in the shadow of other villages such as Besalú and Peratallada, so be sure to visit it during your vacation and discover the pure beauty of this area.

Medieval origins

On the way you already notice how authentic the area is, and the landscape is full of vineyards and fields of cherry trees that reach their maximum bloom in the months of April and May. When you enter the "muga valley" you immediately see how charming the village is and how carefully everything has been preserved. Sant Llorenç de la Muga finds its origins in the year 972 (!), the city wall dates back to the 14th-15th century, the three entrance gates and four towers also testify to its medieval origins. The towers can be climbed to enjoy the view of the village and its location in the valley, surrounded by forests of pines and holm oaks. An irrigation canal crosses the village and some old public and private washing places can still be seen there.

A visit to this village is a breath of fresh air in summer

An ideal summer evening

The town hall is located in a small but attractive square and through a few steps you descend to the river Muga where children play and cool down in summer. In the Plaza Carles Camps there are hundred-year-old trees with a few terraces that make the warm summer evenings a real pleasure. Besides a small store, there are those typical old bars and restaurants that still keep the village authentic and pure.

The many narrow streets lure you to come and look at the small ancient stone houses with balconies and antique lanterns, your eyes will feast. The village has about 250 inhabitants.

Snack & Drink

In Sant llorenç de la Muga you can eat well, with an extensive "menu del dia" at noon but the restaurants are also open in the evening. And even the menu dishes take you back to old Spain; it is a relief to spend an evening here! #bonvidatips

We like to eat at restaurant Samuga with cozy outdoor terrace and always fresh dishes. However, on the central square there is also a good pizzeria and a village restaurant. You can always get a bite to eat there, no need to make reservations.

Restaurant Samuga
Rambla Passeig 4, 17732 Sant Llorenç de la Muga.
